There are a lot of reasons for you to visit Opelika and Auburn in Alabama. Being some of the older cities in the southern states they have a certain charm that you won’t be able to easily find anywhere else.
In addition to being twin cities steeped in culture and history, Opelika and Auburn are also located at the intersection of several major highways, which means traveling to and from here is made very easy. But more than anything else it’s the southern pace of life, and warm welcome, which draws people here throughout the year. In fact, some of our visitors love our little corner of the world so much they decide to relocate here.
Here are some of our own personal favorite things about living here – some of the cultural movers and shakers in Auburn & Opelika that we wanted to share with you.
#1 Golf is the Best in the State
Did you know Auburn and Opelika boast the best golfing in the state of Alabama? Actually, people from all around the South come to this area for a golfing getaway.
Anyone reading this who has ever held a golf club will have heard of the Robert Trent Jones Grand National. If, for whatever reason, you haven’t then you’ll be pleased to know that this golf course has been consistently voted as one of the best public golf courses in the world. Offering almost year-round play, this golf course offers you the perfect excuse to pay Auburn and Opelika a visit. The fact that the course is built around the 600-acres of Lake Saugahatchee means you can also enjoy some spectacular scenery.
#2 The Legendary Toomer’s Corner
Have you always felt the need to take part in the most bizarre traditions you come across? If so, then Auburn should be at the top of your list of places to visit. Toomer’s Corner is famous for one simple thing: everything being covered in tissue hurled from the crowds that assemble there when the Auburn Tigers bring a victory home. It’s a truly strange spectacle, but completely enjoyable too – you have to try it at least once in your life.
#3 The CityFest
On the last Saturday of April each year more than 40,000 people turn Auburn and Opelika into festival cities. This is a family-focused festival, so expect lots of great food, live music entertainment and exhibits by local and regional artists – your kids will definitely want to check out the ‘Imagination Station.’ This is not an event you want to miss – rain or shine.
#4 The War Eagle
If you’ve never seen an eagle up close and personal, then you probably have no real perspective on how truly amazing (and intimidating) they can be. Now imagine seeing 90,000 Tigers fans cheering on their local American “War Eagle” as it circles Jordan-Hare Stadium before each big game. You would, quite literally, need to be made of stone to not feel in awe when watching War Eagle do its thing. Please note this eagle is trained and cared for by the Southeastern Raptor Centre, part of the Auburn College of Veterinary Medicine – it’s not harmed in any way during its performances.
#5 On The Tracks
This fantastic food, wine and music event takes place twice each year – once in April and again in October. Situated on Railroad Avenue, there are lots to take in during each night of ‘On the Tracks’. If you enjoy great food and drink, then there’s that, plus lots of live music. Or if you wanted to get some shopping done, then drop by the event as the local stores remain open, allowing you to enjoy the best of both worlds.
There’s lots more to enjoy in Auburn and Opelika, but it’s only when you visit here that you realize just how much we have to offer you and your family.
